New arrivals to the home need preparation and a good mindset. Those with dementia do not understand. Please don’t tell the person, “I’m leaving you here for a few days” when you don’t take him or her home ever. The best introductions involve having several short stays before the final stay. Usually, the person does not like the first stay, tolerates the second and with the third and final wants to visit the new friends. Even better the person meets school friends of old. I’m amazed that in small communities, people find each other again after many years. Shouldn’t people stumble across old school mates all the time? I suppose people leave and come back. Anyway, it makes for a great reunion.
