The Painful Walk

The transition from walking to a wheelchair will never be easy. He would take so long to move anywhere. It started with a few skin tears and a few falls. Fortunately, it never came to a broken leg forcing the change. The staff made the decision to move him to a wheelchair. First, wheel-chairing him to the dining room so he doesn’t miss his meal. Then the walk to the activity room became a chore. The stones in the driveway meant another falls risk. Finally, he just remained in the chair. He didn’t like it and will try to get out, sometimes without a fall. We banned tying people into chairs long age, so he can’t be left alone. He has to sit with the other residents so staff could watch him. He did love sitting alone looking out of the large picture windows onto the mountain, especially in the winter. There is no easy solution. It comes down to rights and safety. Often safety wins.
