The Slow Stream

She took his hand. They set off slowly down the stairs. He reaches over to hold the rail and she holds on the other side. She says he should hold on tight, although it is she who keeps one hand on the rail and the other on the small child. Does she want him to feel safe or is she keeping herself safe? Everyone behind listens to her and slows the pace to hers.
